Course Description

This course explores Ezra and Nehemiah in its setting of a return migration to Jerusalem (Ezra 1:1-4). The people returned to Jerusalem in crisis without a Davidic king and without an established temple. What can Ezra and Nehemiah teach us about restoring hope and faith to God?

Meet the Instructor

Dr. Roger Nam

Dr. Roger S. Nam joins Candler after serving as dean and professor of biblical studies at Portland Seminary at George Fox University in Oregon. A financial analyst before turning his attention to biblical studies, Nam focuses his research on the economies of the ancient Near East and the book of Ezra-Nehemiah, applying traditional historical-critical methods within social-scientific frameworks. He has also served as a pastor in Seoul, Korea.
